Who We Are
The Pod Beneath the Surface

Our Mission
From its inception, our mission for the Kula Nai`a Foundation included both public education and marine conservation. During the first decade of its existence, the majority of our efforts focused on the study of marine mammals and marine bioacoustics in Hawai‘i. By combining a deep understanding of the behavior and ecology of marine species (based on our research) with many years of experience working in education and local, community-based marine resource management, the Kula Nai'a Foundation is uniquely suited to provide information, resources and workshops on marine conservation. We strive to foster a better understanding of the impacts of human activities on the marine environment and its inhabitants.
Meet The Team

Jan Östman-Lind
President and Co-founder
Jan Östman-Lind earned his Ph.D. through University of California, Santa Cruz, by studying the social behavior of Hawaiian spinner dolphins using an innovative underwater viewing boat that he helped design and build. It provided a new perspective on spinner dolphin behavior as it allowed for focal animal follows and determining the sex of individual animals. Jan holds two undergraduate degrees in animal physiology (cod fish) from Gothenburg University in Sweden, and animal behavior (river otter) from Stockholm University in Sweden, and an MA in animal physiology and behavioral biology (social behavior of bottlenose dolphins in captivity) from San Francisco State University. He also holds a MA.Sci.Ed. in Upper Secondary Education, from University of Lindköping, Sweden.

Ania Driscoll-Lind

She then spent most of the last 15 years teaching elementary science and environmental science at an International School in London, UK . Ania holds two undergraduate degrees - in Biology and Environmental Studies - and a MS in Marine Science from the University of California, Santa Cruz. She holds an MA in Education Assessment from the Institute of Education, University College London.
