The Kula Nai‘a Foundation was founded to increase the opportunities for
marine mammal research on the island of Hawaii. The initial focus of the Foundation was the population of spinner dolphins off this island, continuing the longest running study of spinner dolphins in the world and one of the longest running studies of any dolphin species, spanning over 30 years.
However, the Island of Hawai‘i
provides an unrivaled location for marine research in general, with it’s
combination of calm, clear water conditions, unusually rich marine mammal fauna,
and extensive fringing and patch reefs. The Kula Nai‘a Foundation is dedicated
to promoting all levels of marine science research and we are assisting in the
development of research in two other areas, humpback whale and coral reef
research.
